Trip to KNC and Krung Ching Waterfall
 
Day 1
 
11 March 2010
 

Pick up the guest in Krabi airport at 6 pm. A bit too late for night birding when we arrived at the resort. Check in and dinner time.

 

Day 2
 
12 March 2010
 
Breakfast at 6 am. Get to Gurney’s Pitta spot, we knew that we really have a small chance to see him but better to tried. We didn’t see the Gurney’s but we saw a lot the birds came to bird bath.

Time for lunch, get back to the resort and have some lunch, rest time for everybody. Start birding again at 2 pm.

Our favorite site pick up some good stuff like Green-backed Flycatcher, Black-and-Yellow Broadbill and Red-billed Malkoha. In the evening we got nice pictures of Blyth's Frogmouth. Time for dinner and beers for everybody.

 

Day 3

Breakfast at 6.30 am. Spent some time looking for Large Wren-Babbler but unlucky, we didn’t find him, no call at all. Anyways we got good stuff on the trail a flock of raptors come through Jerdon's Baza, Black Baza and Crested Serpent Eagle.

Lunch and rest time for everybody, I spend my after lunch time to get a good shot of Orange-bellied Flowerpecker at the garden of the resort. We were back to the bird bath again, very busy with Bulbuls, Babblers and other birds but still no Gurney’s Pitta.

 

Day 4

 

14 March 2010
 

Breakfast at 6.30 am. We been to the main trail in the park today to see the blue pool, on the way we get a good view and good pictures of Chinese Blue-Flycatcher, Moustached Babbler, Red-crowned Barbet and Chestnut-rumped Babbler.

Tried B-trail but very quiet today, time to go back and pack for everybody, on the way out we pick up Grey-capped Woodpecker and Grey-rumped Treeswift.

Two guest are designed to do 5 more days for birding in Krung Ching, only 2 of the guest pack up and check out. Before drop them off at Krabi Airport we stop at Tiger temple for Streaked Wren-Babbler and Blue Whistling-Thrush. We still have time to go to the mangrove for 20 mins we saw Brown-winged Kingfisher and Ruddy Kingfisher and a Mangrove Pitta show up, some of us got a view of him.

Time to drop Runy at Krabi Hotel, he designed to go to Similan Island on 16 and stay overnight there to get Nicobar Pigeon. We got message from him on 16 March he got a good view of bird, good news that we know the still in the island, we are a bit worried that the bird may moved to island 2 for nesting.

The rest of us were back to the resort, spend other night here, and will do morning birding here before we drive to Krung Ching Khao Luang National Park.

 

Day 5

Breakfast at 6 am. Tried Large Wren-Babbler again but unlucky again. But we got a good view of Thick-billed Green-Pigeon and Puff-backed Bulbul.

Time to pack and drive to Krung Ching, we arrived Krung Ching 2.30 pm. Took about 4 hours drive and lunch break. Very lucky we got a fruiting tree at the HQ, Sultan Tit, Scaly-breasted Bulbul and Brown Barbet.

Up to the main trail, good view of Raffle’s Malkoha, Rufous-tailed Tailorbird, we tried Banded Kingfisher and Broadbill but no luck today. Spent some time in the evening looking at the guest's wishlist. 

 

Day 6

Breakfast and tried to the first trail, after we knew what the guest want to see we can put everythings on the plan, good view of Gold-whiskered Barbet, Grey-throated Babbler, Grey-headed Babbler and Fluffy-backed Tit-Babbler, this the special bird for us to see here. We tried Rail Babbler but no luck today, we will try again tomorrow. Snack for lunch today, before we go back we have a good view and nice pictures of Scarlet-rumped Trogon and Orange-breasted Trogon.

On the way out got good view of White-crowned Hornbill and some other birds. We tried on the main road again Stump-tailed Macaque and Dusky Langur. Dinner time, tonight very busy at the resort.

 

Day 7

Breakfast at 6 am, today we designed to go on Rail Babbler trail in the afternoon, so in the morning we are in the park. We were at our favourite trail outside the park Rufous Piculet, Green Iora and Dark-thighed Falconet. We have early lunch today, because we have to walk quiet long way to the Rail Babbler.

Afternoon we got to the place of him but someone are there ( not so good news for us ). But in the way round because those people are saw the bird and time for them to leave (luck turn to us).

Let’s find him, took about 1.30 hours to get him, because where we were start about 10 tourist came through, we hope no more come through but still more come. We got him after no more tourist come through. The guest got some picture of the Malaysian Rail Babbler (happy ending). Time to leave him alone.

Oh! Forgot something on the way to Rail Babbler we got a cute picture of a male Black-naped Monarch in the nest.

Time for early dinner, tonight we will go for night birding again. Take about 30 mins to find Buffy Fish-Owl with the frog in his mouth (Buffy Frog-Owl), this is his nick name. Nobody got a picture only got really really good view of him, some Thai’s photographer are came to join us, we tried Brown Wood-Owl but can’t find him. Bed time.

 

Day 8

 

18 March 2010
 

The guest doesn’t want breakfast because we have to tried to get to Chestnut-naped Forktail before somebody else. Took about 30 mins to get him, happy morning. We on the way back we tried to get Banded Broadbill and we got him.

On the way to resort Yellow-bellied Prinia, Crimson Sunbird and Whiskered Treeswift. Time for coffee break and pack up.

We drived to Khao Sok NP, toke about 4 hours to got there, we have a half day here to get what we want, but if we can today we will stay one night here. Let’s go and get them. First 10 mins everybody give up but not me, I tried very hard and high hope to get this bird, and Wow that him Rufous-collared Kingfisher our prince, good view and some picture of him. Time for soft drink and move on to Phang-Nga.

Arrived at Thai Muang Golf Course at 5 pm. Good time for birding in this area River Lapwing, Pink-necked Green-Pigeon and Chestnut-cheeked Starling. On the way got Black-nest Swiftlet.

Tonight we stay at Thai Maung Resort very close to the beach, dinner at seafood restaurant and bed time.

Oh! When we were arrived at the resort we heard an Owl but can not find him, we know that is Spotted Eagle-Owl very good bird to see but no luck.

 
Day 9
 
19 March 2010
 

Late morning today, we leave the hotel at 7 am got some coffee from 7/11. Back to the golf course and Black-headed Ibis fly above our head, nobody got camera. No Orange-brested Green-Pigeon for us but we still got Barred Buttonquail one of the list. Time to move to the mangrove not much luck today.

Drop the guest in Krabi Hotel, we are arrived at Phuket by 4 pm. Very nice trip the guest got over 100 species lifer.
