Five day bird photography trip of North Thailand – January 2014

Mike is a long time friend of South Thailand Birding and for his annual trip this year Games showed him around the mountains of Chiang Mai province near the northern border with Myanmar.

This simple trip report is designed to show just how many birds can be photographed well in the area in a few days. This is due to the number of local and visiting photographers who have staked out many of the rarer resident and winter visiting birds. On the mountains of Doi Lang and Doi Ang Khang there are now many semi-permanent hides set up which are open to the public. The bulk of the following photographs were taken at these blinds with a few opportunistic photographs taken along the way. They were all taken by Mike during this trip using a Canon 1DS mark 3 and a 500mm Canon lens.

Of course, many other birds were seen and photographed. This is just the cream of the crop.

Days 1,2 & 3 – Doi Lang

We staying in a resort in the town of Fang at the base of the mountain and drove up to the mountain top each morning. Various hides were visited two or three times to maximise the number of species photographed. Other photos were taken while walking the road.
