Nam Nao NP

There are no local specials at Nam Nao, everything here can be seen on other northern mountains too. However, there is a good network of trails through a variety of habitats, the bird list is long and it's a very pleasant place to spend a few days birdwatching. We stay in the park accommodation which is better than most. There are a couple of restaurants serving food and hot drinks all day next to the HQ. The hot drinks are important, Nam Nao is very cold on winter mornings.

Red-billed Scimitar Babbler

White-crested Laughingthrush

Below the HQ buildings a path takes you down to a network of trails along the river. Here you are under the canopy of deciduous trees and are likely to find Silver Pheasant, Partridges, Forktails and many other forest birds.

After following one of the river trails for a while at ascends into a more open area of pine trees and grasslands. Here you may be able to find Chinese Francolin, Woodpeckers and other more open area birds. Most mornings all the local Falconets gather to socialise before heading off to hunt.

This same trail will then lead you back to the HQ area. Here there is a large campsite and various other open, tree lined areas containing the accommodation. Walking these areas can be productive too. Minivets, more Woodpeckers, Barbets and plenty more.
