Resources For Bird Watching Tours

Where to Bird in Thailand

Thailand's remarkable diversity of habitats — from lowland rainforest to coastal mangroves — makes it one of Asia's most rewarding birding destinations, with over 1,000 bird species recorded across the country.

Southern Thailand sits on a narrow peninsula where the Andaman Sea meets the Gulf of Thailand, creating a unique mix of forest types and coastal habitats quite different from the country's north. Whether you're drawn to the deep forest interior or the edges where land meets sea, the region rewards patient birders at every turn.

Southern Thailand

The southern peninsula's geography sets it apart. Lowland evergreen forest, limestone karst, mangroves, and offshore islands combine to support an extraordinary range of species — including many that are rarely encountered further north. Thailand as a whole hosts over 1,000 birds, around 1,000 butterflies, 10,000 moths, and over 300 reptiles.

Even the coastal waters teem with life — over 200 species of reef fish have been recorded just snorkelling off the local beach.

Guided Local Knowledge

Knowing where to look is half the challenge. Tour leader Punjapa Phetsri (Games), based in Phuket, has spent many years exploring the birding areas of southern Thailand and beyond. Spending time in the forest with a knowledgeable local guide dramatically increases both the number of species seen and the depth of the experience.

Games' expertise extends beyond birds to butterflies, reptiles, frogs, and mammals — making every outing a full nature experience.
